Dismissal Procedures

Take-in and dismissal procedures will remain the same for this upcoming year. Please read the following information carefully. If you have any questions, be sure to contact the office. We will be happy to talk with you about our procedures.

Please be aware that students on transfer and their parents must abide by the transfer policy set by MCPSS. This states, "Parents and students are to assume responsibility for satisfactory attendance, discipline, achievement of the student and cooperation with the school staff while at the transfer school. When these responsibilities are not met, the transfer will be revoked."

Morning routine:

  1. Provident Lane will be ONE WAY going in the direction from Stein Street to The Cedars in the morning and afternoons.
  2. Students will be dropped off at the Provident Street parking lot that is located in the front of the Glenys Mason Learning Center. They will proceed into the cafeteria/blacktop for morning supervision and/or breakfast. Students MAY NOT be dropped off on campus BEFORE 7:45 a.m. unless enrolled in Austin's before school care program. Children on campus before 7:45 a.m. will be brought into the supervised program and parents will be charged a fee.
  3. Bus and daycare students will also be dropped off at the back gate on The Cedars and proceed into the cafeteria/blacktop for breakfast and/or supervision via the walking track.

The back gates on The Cedars will be locked as part of our Safety Plan for Mary B. Austin. Please DO NOT drop your child off at this location. Student safety is foremost in our minds and students must be dropped off in the Provident Lane driveway. Thank you.

Afternoon routine:

Carpool students:

  1. Students will be situated on the sidewalk which is located next to the 2-story building to be supervised by teachers and Safety Patrol during dismissal procedures.
  2. Provident Lane will be ONE WAY going in the direction from Stein St. to The Cedars in the morning and afternoons.
  3. Parents will NOT be allowed to walk up to the building to pick up their child(ren). This will be strictly enforced again this year! We only have a few problems at the beginning of the year but were quickly resolved once the rule was explained. We are requesting that you do NOT park on a side street and walk up to pick up your child. Remain in your car and follow the carpool procedures.
  4. PLEASE have an 81/2 by ll (or larger) piece of cardboard with your child's LAST name and grade written in LARGE, BOLD letters using a wide point marker for easy viewing. Teachers and safety patrol students will be calling names using megaphones so this is a must to help with a faster, more efficient method of placing students in their vehicles.
  5. No cell phone usage while in carpool line, please.
  6. Drivers will make 2 lanes upon entering the driveway and pull up to the area designated by white lines.
  7. Upon leaving the driveway both lanes of cars will turn RIGHT onto Provident. Provident will be one-way during morning and afternoon hours.
  8. Adult supervision is provided until 3:45. Students not picked up by that time will be brought into the Austin Extended Day Program and will be charged a fee for each delinquent pick-up. We realize that everyone has an emergency periodically so each family will be given one "Get Out of Paying" card for each semester. Accurate records will be maintained. Please be prompt in picking up your child in the afternoons by 3:45 in order to eliminate the EDC fee.

NOTE: ABSOLUTELY no cars will be allowed to pick up students from the back area of the school. This is restricted to buses and daycare vans ONLY.

Bus and daycare Van Students:

  1. Students that ride daycare vans or buses will be dismissed to the back area by Old Ann each afternoon.
  2. Teachers will supervise the dismissing of these students at The Cedars back gate.
  3. Absolutely no cars will be allowed to pick up students from the back area of the school. This is restricted to buses and daycare vans ONLY.

Walkers:

  1. Walking students will be dismissed at 3:10 and will exit out the connector doors. They will proceed to the traffic guard and will walk home from the front of the school building.  This will eliminate walkers on The Cedars where bus and car traffic would prove much too dangerous for our students.  It may take a few minutes extra to walk home but safety is number one!!
  2. Students' residence will be verified to determine that they are within walking distance to their homes or after-school guardians.
  3. Students MAY NOT walk to side streets to waiting cars. Car riders MUST go through the carpool procedures at all times!
